These clients had recently bought this property, which has a large 3.5 acre garden. Despite the large amount of space available, the existing south facing terrace at the back covered a small area and was paved with unsuitable driveway pavers. There was practically no decorative planting in the back garden apart from mature trees and hedging along the boundaries. A distant artificial pond was leaking and the ugly liner was showing. Rough ground at the far end of the plot was poorly planted.
The family wanted space for outside entertaining and activity. The design has created a number of paved terraces, with interconnecting paths and lush planting across the back of the house and timber garage. The main terrace has an area designated for barbecuing, with a full outdoor kitchen, dining table and loungers. A feature wall, clad in grey slate, and additional hedging help conceal the back of the garage and utility space. A second terrace near the kitchen has plenty of space for sofa seating. Additionally, there are paved areas for table tennis and a hot tub which the teenagers and their friends love. The paving chosen is grey porcelain.
All paved areas are surrounded by new planting. A formal garden, with parasol pleached Lime trees, is planted between the two main terraces and provides separate interconnecting gravel paths. The colour scheme includes purple Salvias, lime green Alchemilla mollis, pink Cistus and white ground cover Roses. Sun loving Erigeron Karvinskianus edges paths and provides pretty pink and white daisy like flowers throughout the summer.
The large pond was refurbished, with a new deck and pond plants. Beyond the pond large areas of wild flower meadow have been planted which attract hoards of butterflies and bees.
